Obedience

obedience

As a child of the most high God, am grateful and honoured to be called and to be chosen by Him the Lord Jesus Christ. The first lesson that was taught to me as a Christian is obedience. I personally thought I was living the life God wants me to live, however I realized that I was far from knowing Jesus Christ or living that Life.

I was not totally submitted to Jesus Christ and his words instead I was being controlled by self and stuck in my own selfish and stubborn ways…. in other words I needed deliverance but seeing that I was a Christian I never knew that Christians needed deliverance. I thought that because am baptized in the name of Jesus I was on my way to heaven but that is another story for another time.

Obedience – Obedience is an attitude of heart toward a higher authority. As Christians, that higher authority is God Himself. The Lord said in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” It also deals with the individual’s own attitude towards God.

As children of God we must submit our ways to God. The scripture emphatically says:

K J V Romans 7:18 ►
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

So in our flesh dwells no good thing so when we try to do good, evil presents itself but it must be noted that man is tripartite which means they are made up of; soul, body and spirit.

Soul-the human soul is the part of a person that is not physical. It is the part of every human being that lasts eternally after the body experiences death. Genesis 35:18 describes the death of Rachel, Jacob’s wife, saying she named her son “as her soul was departing.” From this we know that the soul is different from the body and that it continues to live after physical death.

Spirit-The human spirit is the incorporeal part of man. The Bible says that the human spirit is the very breath of Almighty God and was breathed into man at the beginning of God’s creation: “Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7). It is the human spirit that gives us a consciousness of self and other remarkable, though limited, “God-like” qualities. The human spirit includes our intellect, emotions, fears, passions, and creativity.

Body-The physical part of man, which can also be referred  to as the flesh, it hosts the soul and spirit and in my own opinion the most jealous of the three.

NB::: Earlier on I said I was stuck in my own ways—to be more specific, my flesh was in charge and leading me so I adhered to the suggestions of the flesh; I would say “this is what I want,” it was mostly about me, me, me and more me .

Until I read a book that was recommended by a man of God, the book was called, “Experiencing The Depths of Jesus Christ”, it teaches alot about self. This is where my change came about, I realized that my flesh was in control and I was subjected to self and my own ways, this is where I started to pray by asking God to deliver me from self and start listening to the holy Spirit than my own fleshy desire. I started asking Him what is it I was to do, when to do and how. I started depending on Him more. I started saying, “take more of me and give me more of you.” I now realized that I was feeling more joyful.

I must note that before all of this I was hearing from God; he would speak to me but I was not in totally subjection and because of the spirit of disobedience and my own self will, God could not demonstrate Himself to me as he would love to manifest. I remember a man of God once asked me if I wanted my will or God’s will. Spiritually I wanted God’s will and Physically I was battling with flesh, this was when the Lord explained to me that the flesh is always jealous of the spirit because the flesh knows it’s destination; in the flesh dwelleth no good thing and as one tries to do God’s will, the flesh will try to corrupt the spirit because it is full of filthy desires. Furthermore, the Lord explained that the flesh lusts after the spirit and is always in opposition of the words of God. Wow! this was when I knew that I wanted flesh/self to be totally slain in me, I know I needed more of Jesus and less of me. Gradually I started to change and it was not so hard because of the peace I felt and so flesh was always sobbing, murmuring and groaning because it was losing control. Flesh was very confused I was now taking a stand, I was now saying I am no longer taking suggestions or orders so then flesh began to retaliate. It’s always a tag and war between the flesh and the spirit.

However I must emphasize that once we are living in this physical world we will have to deal with the flesh …it takes discipline, obedience and love…Yes love; I can’t emphasize more on love. The scripture says in John 14:15, “If you love me keep my commandments”.
I know I love the Lord so I desist entertaining satan. There was another scripture that came home to me during this time:

◄ 1 Samuel 15:22 ◄
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

This is something that the Lord told me personally, he said to obey Him is to honour Him and to disobey Him is to deny Him. It sounds hard and unrealistic so I asked Him why he would say to denied Him and he said because one man cannot have two masters, it’s either Him the Lord God Almighty or satan. I was taken aback when he said this …so then someone might ask, “can one act of disobedient can determine this…” well it only took one act of disobedience for Adam and Eve to be thrown out of the garden of Eden. That is the reason why it’s imperative we try to walk in obedience observing his will and acknowledging his ways. This is the way of the Lord, there is no short cut or any u-turn.

There are numerous of scripture that talk about obedience. Obedience is so important and the scripture also says in Ephesians 6: 1-3; Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Obedience is such a beautiful thing and as children of God let us walk in his words defeating the devil with the blood of Jesus Christ and walking in obedience and in according to his word.

THE BENEFITS OF OBEYING

When one obeys God it maintains an intimate connection with God so much so that it prompts you to respond to his beckoning. Also, obeying God allows one to know Him better, the more you communicate with God the more you will know his voice.

Example– when you meet a new friend you don’t know their voice well but as time goes by and you communicate with that Friend you will realize that over a period of time you know their voice…you start finishing each other sentences. You start knowing their ways, you can tell their likes and dislikes so it become very easy to communicate with that friend so it is with God.

BECAUSE ABRAHAM OBEYED, GOD MADE A COVENANT WITH HIM FOR:

  1. Fruit of the womb
  2. Land and Kings to come out of his seed
  3. Long life
  4. His name to be great throughout the Earth. “AND IN YOUR SEED ALL THE FAMILIES OF THE EARTH SHALL BE BLESSED”.
  5. Great nation
  6. Blessings (to others and his servants)
  7. Fruit of the ground
  8. Livestock
  9. Land

Galatians 3:29- “And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego because of their obedience to God that say we should have no other God but Him, we must bow to no other God but Him or worship any other God but Him…today we all enjoy that story and know that God is able to deliver us from fiery situations. It caused king Nebuchadnezzar to have a change of heart towards God. What if they had bowed and disobeyed God …I would not be here today using them as an example

God asked Noah to do a strange job. He asked him to build a boat when there wasn’t even a lake or an ocean around. God told Noah that He was going to flood the whole earth with water. The boat that God asked him to build was to be huge! It was to be large enough to hold Noah and his family and also some of each kind of animal that lived on the earth. It may have seemed like a strange request from God, but Noah obeyed. In the end, Noah’s family and the animals were saved but the people that laughed and jeered wasn’t.
