| What
is Coaching?
The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching
this way: "Professional Coaching is an ongoing
partnership that helps clients produce fulfilling results
in their personal and professional lives. Through the
process of coaching, clients deepen their learning,
improve their performance, and enhance their quality
of life." I explain to friends “you know
how many people are unhappy with where they are in life?
Well, as a life coach, I help them design and create
the life they love”.
How
does coaching work?
Life coaches help individuals do and be their best
in all areas of their lives. A coach supports, empowers
and holds their clients accountable. A coach tells the
truth with compassion. A coach helps the client define
their vision, uphold their commitments and access their
passion. A coach assists their client in making their
dreams come true. Life Coaching is all about helping
you get from where you are in your life to where you
want to be.
Life Coaching in most cases conducted over the phone,
but can also occur via email, face to face individually,
or even in groups.
What
benefits can a client expect from coaching?
People who experience Life Coaching often tell us that
for the first time in their lives they find answers
to “deep questions” like who am I? Why am
I here, what brings me joy? How do I create a life I
love, NOW? Generally clients say coaching helps them
- Get clear on what they truly want
- Consider more options
- Dare to set bigger goals
- Achieve goals more quickly
- Finish what they start
Who
benefits from coaching?
People's motivation during Life Coaching tends to come
from one of two scenarios: either they want to move
away from something or they want to move towards something.
In any case Life Coaching is about positive change
in one or more areas of life, e.g.
Life Transitions
Self Confidence
Spirituality
Stress levels
Happiness
What
would my typical coaching session be like?
In the simplest scenario, you and I schedule a time
to talk once a week on the phone. You set the agenda
while I ask objective, probing, but supportive questions
to help you get clarity, set reasonable goals and follow
through to completion. Often there is homework which
requires some action in between sessions and these are
reviewed and refined during the next session. Depending
on the issue and your preference, I might use follow-up
emails or short telephone calls in between sessions.
The format and timing vary with the client, I am very
flexible, and you are in charge, but what seems to work
best for most clients is a 45 minute session once a
week, for 12 weeks (12 sessions).
"Coaching is an action-oriented partnership that, unlike psychotherapy which delves into patterns of the past, concentrated on where you are today and how you can reach your goals.”
